Our History

1974

Parliament passes the Motor Vehicle (Third Party Insurance) Act to require that owners and drivers of motor vehicles be insured against liability in respect of the death of or bodily injury to persons caused by or arising out of the use of motor vehicles.
1974 - 1997

Commencement of operations as Motor Vehicles Insurance (PNG) Trust up to 1997.
1995

In December 1995, Motor Vehicles Insurance (PNG) Trust (now incorporated as "Motor Vehicles Insurance Limited" acquired 2,130,000 shares or a 22.42% shareholding in Bank South Pacific (BSP) to become the second largest shareholder behind Credit Corporation (PNG) Ltd with 24.89%.
1997

Motor Vehicles Insurance (PNG) Trust Limited (MVITL) is incorporated under the
Companies Act in 1997.
1998

Official incorporation of Motor Vehicles Insurance Limited (MVIL).
MVIL forms a joint venture with Allianz New Zealand to establish Pacific MMI Insurance.
2004

MVIL sets up the Vehicle Registration & Management System (VRMS) as it commences
issuance of Two-In-One sticker (CTP insurance and registration). A move from the use of
single sticker – CTP insurance only.
Central becomes the first province to sign up for the twin sticker agreement.
MVIL begin expanding its branch network from Port Moresby to other provinces in PNG.
2005

Western Highlands Province signs twin sticker agreement with MVIL.
2006

East Sepik and Eastern Highlands Provinces signs twin sticker agreement.
2007

MVIL opens a Branch in Lae, Morobe Province.
2008

The Operations Division was created and the Motor Traffic Registry Services (MTRS) was moved under it to become one of its sections.
2009

MVIL acquires 100% of Pacific MMI after buying out Allianz New Zealand.

In order to increase road safety awareness, MVIL launches a road safety campaign under the tagline “Road Safety: It’s not a Game” which enlists the support of professional rugby league players in PNG and Australia.
2013

MVIL goes ‘cashless’; therefore, reducing the security risk to both customers and the company.
2014

MVIL opens a sub-branch on Lihir Island to service the Newcrest Mining.
2015

The company is awarded the Prime Minister’s Award for Service Innovation, Improvement and Achieving Better Outcomes.
2020

MVIL acquires majority shareholding of re-insurance company, Pacific Re Limited.
2021
Motor Vehicles (Third Party Insurance) (Amendment) Act 2021 is passed by Parliament with the following key amendments set in place:
All motor vehicles and machinery operating in the country – including those operating in the extractive, logging and agriculture industry sites – must be covered by CTP insurance.
MVIL is only liable for accidents as a consequence of the use of registered motor vehicles.
The amount of basic protection compensation to dependents of persons who die as a result of motor vehicle accidents is increased. The dependents will receive K10,000 regardless of whether they are adult male, adult female or a minor which is a significant improvement on the previous legislation which was more favourable to adult males.
MVIL rebrands with the unveiling of its new logo and new corporate colours.
MVIL opens its new flagship branch at Vision City, Port Moresby, under the new re-brand.
2022

MVIL signs joint inspections and information sharing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with PNG Customs Service which enables the company set up offices at PNG’s international ports (Motukea and Lae Port) in order to count and record new vehicles entering the country.
2023

MVIL celebrates its Silver Jubilee, introducing its first company slogan (“Serving comes first”) and launches its brand-new website, as the company aims to provide a high level of customer service to all its customers.

On 29 May 2023 MVIL opened its Lae Regional Office at the PNG Ports Precinct and Lae Flagship Branch at the Brian Bell Plaza.

Daru Branch officially opens for service on 15 June 2023.

10 August 2023, consolidation of Operations and Business Strategy divisions into Customer Service Division.

MVIL opens Motukea Sub-branch on 15 November 2023.

MVIL is awarded for being the Most Transformational State-owned Enterprise from 2022-2023 during the annual PNG Human Resource Institute (PNGHRI) Conference held in Port Moresby from November 28-30.
2024

17 January 2024, first Corporate VIP Access Card issued to Ela Motors.

7 February 2024, new Customer Service Centre opens in Buka, Autonomous Region of Bougainville (AROB).

11 October 2024, commissioning of Walume Sub-branch in Imbonggu District, Southern Highlands Province.
